New Braunfels kicks off German festivities and Tour

Wurstfest starts today in New Braunfels, a city founded in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. He named the settlement in honor of his hometown of Solms-Braunfels, Hesse in Germany. Opening ceremony is set today at 5 p.m. with the biting the sausage ribbon to kickoff the festivities with music by Comal Community Band and Alex Meixner Band.

Gruene water tower
On Saturday and Sunday, the festivities include the well-noted Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic, located in nearby Gruene, Texas. The event includes individual and two-person time trials and 17-mile (27-km), 31-mile (50-km), 46-mile (74-km), and 64-mile (102-km) routes. Notables including Lance Armstrong have participated in this event.
Online registration has already ended, however, walk ons are still acceptable. Meet at Gruene Hall to register. Plan to arrive at 6:30 a.m.
